| Archaeology is increasingly
becoming a profession all over the world. Its scope
has expanded from making sensational discoveries once
in a while. Archaeological studies or inputs from archaeologists
are now considered important in issues such as environmental
conservation, urban societies, town planning etc. Many
archaeologists now work for government or private environment
monitoring companies or similar organizations. People
have developed a concern to preserve the human cultural
and biological heritage for future generations. In India,
in Maharashtra there is ample opportunity for such studies
and their application.
We, in the University of Mumbai do not have a department
of Archaeology offering M.A. or M.Sc. courses in Archaeology
(as the University of Calcutta or the M.S. University
of Baroda have). Students of history, botany, zoology,
language and literature may get interested in the
subject of archaeology and nothing is offered to them
by our University.
As a small step in this direction Centre for Extra-Mural
Studies has designed a Certificate Course in Archaeology
which will be taught on Sundays only.
This course has been designed by Dr.A.P. Jamkhedkar,
Dr. A. S. Phatak, Dr. Vaishali M. Welankar, Dr. Vasant
Shinde, Dr. K. L. Mankodi & Dr. Suraj Pandit.
It will be conducted with active support from Deccan
College, Pune (deemed University) which is very essential
for practical sessions on excavation sites.
